The Royale smells of greasepaint, cigarettes and forty years of first nights. Out front, four hundred people in their good coats watch the stage the way people watch a fire. Death arrives under full light, in front of every one of them, and not a soul can say what they truly saw. Backstage, the dressing-room mirrors keep their own counsel, and somebody's past, the one they left behind in Coventry, appears to have bought itself a ticket.
That is all the file will tell you. The rest arrives on the night, one piece of evidence at a time, and nobody at your table will see the whole of it until the end.
