How many people
do you need?

Six to twelve guests, plus you. That is the short version. The longer version is that each number makes a different kind of evening, and knowing which one you are hosting is most of the planning.

The short answer

A murder mystery party needs six to twelve guests, plus the host, who plays the victim and is not counted. Eight is the easiest number to host, six is the tightest, and twelve is the full table. Fewer than six suits the two player format better, and more than twelve can join as observers.

Why six to twelve

Where the numbers come from.

Below six, there are not enough competing stories for anyone to be suspicious of anyone. Above twelve, private roles stop being private and the accusation outlasts the case. Inside that range, each case has core roles that carry the solution and flexible roles added as the guest list grows.

  • Core roles hold the evidence the solution depends on. They are always dealt.
  • Flexible roles have real secrets but can drop out without breaking the case, so a cancellation is absorbed.
  • The host sits outside the cast. You play the victim.
  • How to cast each number is in the roles guide.
Outside the range

Two people, or a crowd.

  • Two of you. Be the Detective is a separate two player case in five evidence stages, built for a night in.
  • Thirteen or more. Extras join as observers, or run two tables on two cases. For workplaces, see team building.
  • Over a video call. Works well at six to eight. Virtual and hybrid nights →
Questions

Group size, answered.

How many people do you need for a murder mystery party?

Six to twelve guests, plus the host, who plays the victim and is not counted. Eight is the easiest number to host. Six is the tightest. Twelve is the full table.

Does the host count as a player?

No. The host plays the victim, so they are at the party all night without a role to run or a secret to keep.

What if someone cancels?

Each case has core roles that carry the solution and flexible roles that do not. If numbers fall, flexible roles drop first. At six there is no slack, so invite seven.

What if we have more than twelve?

Extra guests can join as observers who watch and question, or you can run a second table on a second case.

What about two people?

The party cases are for groups. For two, Be the Detective is a separate two player format built for a night in.
