Printable kits
vs app hosted.
Both work. They fail differently, and they ask different things of the host. Here is the fair version, including the two things printable kits do better than any app, before the part where we say what we sell.
A printable kit is printed, sorted and read aloud by a host. An app hosted game puts private roles on guests' phones and plays the case on a shared screen, so there is no printing and the host can play. Kits win on needing no devices and on being giftable. Apps win on preparation and on freeing the host.

No column is empty, because neither format is bad. The question is which failure you would rather have.

Two real advantages.
First: a printable kit has no dependencies. No wifi, no phone battery, no shared screen, no account. For a cabin with no signal, a long table outdoors, or a group who would rather not have phones out all evening, that is not a small thing, it is the whole argument.
Second: it is an object. You can wrap a printed kit and hand it to somebody at Christmas. An emailed access code is a worse present than a box, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.
The host gets to be a guest.
The strongest argument for app hosting has nothing to do with technology. It is that in a printed kit, somebody has to run the night, and that somebody is you. You read the scene setting, you watch the clock, you release the next envelope, and you already know who did it. You are working.
When the case runs itself, the host plays the victim. You are the reason everyone is there and you never have to leave the room. That is the difference between throwing a party and attending one.
- No preparation on the day. The hour you would have spent at the printer is an hour you spend cooking.
- Roles stay private. A phone in a pocket is genuinely secret. A booklet on a chair is not.
- It scales. Nine people turn up instead of eight and the case handles it.
- Nothing to lose. No missing envelope, no page left in the printer.

What is the difference between a printable murder mystery kit and an app hosted one?
A printable kit is a PDF you print, sort and hand out, and the host reads the night aloud from a script. An app hosted game puts each guest's private role on their own phone and plays the case on a shared television, so nothing is printed and the host is free to play. The trade is preparation time against a dependency on devices.
Are printable murder mystery kits any good?
Many are very good, and they do two things an app cannot: they work with no devices at all, and a boxed or printed kit is a real object you can wrap and give. What they cost you is an evening of admin before the party and a host who spends the night reading rather than playing.
Which is better for a first time host?
App hosted, because the failure modes are smaller. The most common way a first murder mystery party goes wrong is a host who is trying to run the game and be the host at the same time. If the case runs itself, that cannot happen.
Do I have to choose?
