Wording
Three ways to say it.
Short beats clever. Every invitation needs the date, the time, the address, the dress code and a reply-by date; the rest is tone.

Plan the night
The invitation is only the beginning.

Dress the part
Give a tone rather than a theme: "dress for dinner" or "one jewel colour". It lifts the room without anyone renting anything.

Set the table
Jewel-toned flowers low along the table, candles at different heights, gold on the dark cloth. The cake is the centrepiece; leave it room.

Feed the room
One main that can wait in the oven, a salad, and the cake. Choose a drink you can pour all night rather than a bar you have to run.

Host essentials
Send it two to three weeks ahead. If it is a surprise, send it from someone else, and say so in the first line.
Make it a murder
A murder mystery gives a birthday dinner a plot, and the birthday guest does not have to host it. Every guest gets a private invitation with their character and costume note.

What should an adult birthday invitation say?
