Black tie, or black and gold. It is the one night a year people are glad to be told to dress up.

Black cloth, crystal, gold ribbon and every candle you own. A coupe tower is worth it if the table is steady and someone is sober enough to pour it.

Serve dinner early and properly, then keep something small coming until midnight. Chill twice the champagne you think you need.
