Dress the part
Name a colour rather than a costume: velvet, something red, one piece of gold. It photographs well and nobody has to buy anything.

Set the table
Evergreen down the middle of the table in place of a centrepiece, ivory tapers, cranberry napkins and brass. Keep the arrangement low enough to talk over.

Feed the room
In an Australian December, plan for heat: cold ham, seafood, salads that hold, and a dessert that does not need the oven on at six.

Host essentials
December books out, so send it three to four weeks ahead. Name an end time if it is a weeknight; people are more likely to come to something with an end.
Make it a murder
