Wording
Three ways to say it.
Short beats clever. Every invitation needs the date, the time, the address, the dress code and a reply-by date; the rest is tone.

Eight chairs, one table, too much food. We would love you to take one of the chairs.
Dinner at ours. Nothing to bring, nothing to dress for, and no rush to leave. Reply by Monday so we can shop.

Dress the part
Usually nothing to say. If you want a lift, "dress for dinner" does it without making anyone anxious.

Set the table
Linen, not polyester. Taper candles, a loose arrangement from the garden, and fruit in season doubling as decoration.

Feed the room
Cook something that forgives lateness: a braise, a tray bake, a big salad. Ask about allergies in the invitation, not at the door.

Host essentials
One to two weeks is plenty. Ask for dietary needs when people reply, and seat people who do not know each other next to someone who will look after them.
Make it a murder
A murder mystery runs through the meal instead of stopping it: roles on phones, the case on your TV, nothing to print. Every guest gets a private invitation with their character.

One to two weeks ahead is enough for most dinners. Give three if it is a Saturday in December.
