Wording
Three ways to say it.
Short beats clever. Every invitation needs the date, the time, the address, the dress code and a reply-by date; the rest is tone.

We are opening the house on 31 October. Drinks from half past seven, costume compulsory, questions discouraged.
The candles are lit and the punch is not quite what it seems. You are expected. Kindly reply by the 24th.
Plan the night
The invitation is only the beginning.

Dress the part
Black tie with one wrong detail beats a costume from a bag: a mask, a velvet jacket, a brooch that looks inherited. Put the dress code on the invitation, not in a group chat three days out.

Set the table
Black or oxblood linen, taper candles in brass (LED ones anywhere near curtains), dark dahlias, and plums, figs and grapes as decoration that can be eaten later.

Feed the room
Food that survives being stood over for an hour: soup in cups, one serious grazing board, one dramatic dessert. Batch the punch so the host is not the bartender.

Host essentials
Halloween is crowded, so send it two to three weeks ahead with a reply-by date a week before. Clear a place for coats and masks, and have the playlist sorted before the doorbell.
Make it a murder
The Halloween Files are six original cases set on 31 October, from a Dorset mill in 1897 to a Cornish lighthouse in 1954. Every guest gets a private invitation with their character’s costume note, and the case runs from your TV.

When should you send Halloween party invitations?
Two to three weeks before. Halloween weekends fill quickly, and guests need time to find a costume. Ask for replies a week before the night.
What should a Halloween invitation say?
The date, the time, the address and the dress code, plus a reply-by date. One line of atmosphere is plenty: the tone of the invitation tells people how seriously to take the costume.
